What is a DNS Lookup?

A DNS lookup consists of translating easily remembered domain names (like www.twaino.com), into numbers called IP addresses (eg 194.199.8.10).  These numbers are used by computers to communicate with each other on the internet, but would be difficult for a human to remember. Additionally, an IP address may change from time to time as network settings need to be updated. A DNS lookup works the same way as a contact list on your phone, with one exception: it contains each person’s name without them giving you their number, and if they get a new number, your phone automatically updates. Source: Sistrix  Basically, you don’t have to stress about remembering every number for your contacts. Instead, finding their name is quick and easy. When you’re ready to call them, just select their name and your phone will automatically use their current number. That’s kind of how DNS lookup works.

DNS lookup: How does it work?

As a reminder, a domain name system (DNS) is a system that converts a host name into an IP address for a computer. DNS servers read the search query and translate it into an appropriate IP address to help browsers load relevant results when an end user types a domain or URL into their browser’s search bar. To understand how DNS lookup works, think of DNS servers like a map or phone book.  We all know that to reach a certain destination, we need the right address.  The principle remains the same with the Internet: Smart devices – phones, laptops, tablets and televisions – all connect to the Internet using addresses called IP addresses.   Source: geekflare  DNS servers automate the task of remembering complicated numeric IP addresses, eliminating the need for humans to do so.  DNS resolution is the conversion of a friendly domain name to a machine-readable IP address. Hence the usefulness of DNS servers, they serve to provide relevant results to the user. They are of great importance because humans have difficulty memorizing the long strings of numbers that make up IP addresses. To make it easier for us, the DNS servers simply convert each website name (www.twaino.com example) to its corresponding IP address.

What types of DNS records can be searched?

DNS records come in different forms and are used for various purposes: hosting a website, sending and receiving emails, using a VoIP service, etc.  For each of these types of records, different types of configuration are carried out in order to use the corresponding service. A DNS search tool allows you to search for any domain name on the different types of records listed below: A record search : An IPv4 DNS address or record stores the IP addresses of domain names.  Searching for AAAA records : DNS v6 or IPv6 records are the same as A records, but store IPv6 addresses. CAA record search : These DNS records contain the list of certificate authorities that are authorized to issue certificates for a given domain. CNAME record lookup : Aliases, often referred to as canonical name records, are used to link other types of DNS records. They are used to reference subdomains.  MX record lookup : DNS records of type Mails eXchange are used to store the mail servers responsible for handling emails for the domain name. NS Record Lookup : The authoritative name server IP address for a domain name is stored in DNS records, which is known as NS Record Lookup. PTR Record Lookup : This is the opposite of DNS A or AAAA records, used to translate an IP address to a hostname. SOA Record Lookup: These types of DNS records store data about a domain name, such as the administrator’s email address and last modified date. SRV record lookup : These types of DNS records contain information about the protocols and port numbers used for domain name services, such as VoIP or chat server.  Finding TXT Records : Text records are generally used to store notes like DNS records. However, they usually store configuration settings for various services, such as SPF records that determine which mail servers can send email from the domain, or verification codes for some webmaster tools.

What is a reverse DNS lookup?

The term “reverse DNS” refers to a DNS query that is the reverse of a standard query.  Instead of converting an IP address to a domain name, it converts a domain name to an IP address. But for this, the DNS server must have a PTR record that points to the domain name. Source: alumniyat  As with DNS lookup, there are also specific tools to analyze reverse DNS records.

How to do a DNS lookup?

In general, you don’t need to worry about DNS lookup, because your web browser or operating system takes care of it automatically when you need to find a domain’s IP address. Diagnosing Internet connection issues can be difficult, but most operating systems include a DNS lookup tool to help. Windows has nslookup, while Linux and Mac have an equally powerful lookup tool. These command-line tools can be difficult for non-technical people to understand and use.  The DNS lookup tool developed by Internet Marketing Ninjas has been designed precisely to make DNS lookup easy and accessible to all layers of users.  All you have to do is type in the domain name you want to perform the DNS lookup on and the tool will directly display the results right on your browser.
