Canonical Links All in One

The web is crawling with duplicate content and it is estimated that 25 to 30% of the Web is made up of duplicate content, a figure that does not leave Google indifferent. The American firm downgrades the pages that display the same content, which means that the pages of the same domain can be confronted with this problem. To avoid this, most sites implement canonical URLs to indicate to search engines that the additional URLs are not meant to rank. On Joomla sites, the Canonical Links All in One allows you to set up these canonical URLs automatically to indicate to search engines the main URL for a given content. Through this description, we learn about Canonical Links All in One and its advanced settings.

What is Canonical Links All in One?

Canonical Links All in One is an extension that allows you to get real canonical links for the contents of your Joomla site. These links help ensure that search engines don’t get confused when multiple URLs point to the same content. In principle, this is called content duplication. It remains very often on most websites. On some sites, visitors can filter articles or search for them by category. But the links that allow access to articles from filters and categories are quite different from the original URLs. In terms of SEO, this can lead to the sanction of Google. In its policy of providing Internet users with relevant content, Google seeks to ensure that content only appears on a single address. With Canonical Links All in One, you can set up custom canonical URLs to specify the main URL when multiple addresses lead to the same content. Indeed, Canonical Links All in One inserts canonical links in the code of your site to indicate to search engines the original URL so that the latter is the only one to be used for indexing.

How to install Canonical Links All in One?

To install Canonical Links All in One, go to the Joomla administration panel, click on “Extensions”. Then click “Choose” and select the location of the Canonical Links All in One (ZIP) file on your device, then click “Download”. All that remains is to install it and the extension will activate automatically. After installation, you can monitor the below items:
  • If you have installed sh404sef extension, go to sh404sef settings -> SEO -> Remove other canonical links -> set it to No;
  • If Canonical by StyleWare is installed, you must disable it;
  • If you have enabled an advanced caching mechanism, check what you need to know.

Setting up Canonical Links All in One?

The different configurations of Canonical Links All in One can be done from the advanced settings.

Permanent redirect

It is possible, if you prefer, to always force users to land on the canonical version of the link. That is, if you have changed your address, for example, and someone tries to access an old address, they will automatically land on the new page.

Ignore request

This option is only applicable if permanent redirection is enabled. When enabled, links containing a query in the URL (everything after the question mark in the link, if any) will not be redirected to the canonical page. This option is interesting if you have a page dedicated to printing (so at the end of the URL you have something like ?print=1), etc. Ignore specific query variables (developer option). This option can only be used when the “Ignore request” option is set to No. It allows you to add a comma-separated list of query variables that should be ignored, for example “print, filter”. This option is ideal if you want to prevent the redirection of only certain variables.

Canonical domain

If your website can be accessed through more than one domain, you can specify the preferred domain that will be used for all canonical domains.

Remove end-of-line slash

Choose whether you want to remove the end-of-line slash from canonical links, www.example.com/ or www.example.com. The default is “Yes”.

Disable Canonical Tags on Canonical Pages

If you are viewing a link that is equal to the canonical version, disable the canonical tag because it means you don’t actually have multiple URLs for that content. By default, the value is set to “No”, then it is up to you to set it to “Yes”.

Set default menu for K2 tags

When you have tags assigned to articles that belong to different categories and can be reached via different menus, any tag (regardless of whether it is assigned to an article of a particular category or no) can be reached via any K2 menu. If no option is selected here, the extension will use the first menu in the matching K2 category list for canonical tags, unless a specific menu item is selected in the options.

Override Canonical Tags

If absolutely necessary, you can override the automatically generated canonical link. To do this, first insert the full link to the duplicate page, followed by a vertical separator |, and finally insert the full link to the canonical page. If you need to insert multiple canonical links, place each one on a new line. However, only use it if you are sure you really need it.

Remove Canonical Links

When you want to remove canonical links from certain pages, insert full links to those pages, where each link goes on a new line. You can also use wildcards to exclude all links under a certain path. Writing example.com/exlure-this/* will remove everything that excludes-this, and everything below it. To use a replacement character, it must always end with /*.

Is the extension compatible when you have an advanced caching mechanism?

If you are using an advanced caching mechanism to generate a canonical plugin, this extension must run at least once before caching the page. That is, if you install the plugin and then open a page that you have never visited before, it will be cached with the defined canonical link. So in the future, when the page is opened only from the cache, the canonical link will be set. If you already have cached pages, depending on the type of cache you are using, it may happen that the extension never runs, and therefore it may be necessary to clear the cache once. Also, if you plan to use the permanent redirection feature of the plugin, you need to add javascript redirection for client-side redirection. This is because the extension will not work after the initial caching and server-side redirection cannot be performed. In short, Canonical Links All in One will allow you to correctly set up canonical links on your Joomla site to avoid having problems with duplicate content.
